Dear Donor,
The Jerusalem Municipality wants to open
a building waste and rock landfill (dump) dangerously close to French Hill, Issawiya, Shuaafat Refugee Camp and Anata (north Og).
What does "close" mean? 130
METERS FROM FRENCH HILL'S NAHAGEI HAPRAIDOT STREET, and a mere30 meters
from the Village of Issawiya. We must stop this plan!
The proposed landfill would contain
construction material, rock and debris collected from all over Jerusalem. This landfill is
designed to operate six days a week for 20 years. In doing so, it endangers the
health of no less than 100,000 men, women and children.
The hazards:
*Severe air pollution which may cause
thousands to develop several different lung diseases
*Ground water contamination
*Leishmaniasis (or
"Jericho Buttons") -a dermatological reaction with skin lesions which
first resemble insect bites, but which slowly develop into
ulcers. A person picks up the disease from sand flies which have contracted the
parasite from infected rock hyraxes.
*Air bouyant diesel particles released by
on-site trucks and heavy machinery which cause thousands to develop several
different lung diseases.
*Noise pollution
Israel's Health Ministry
opposes the plan, as do both Hadassah Hospital and Hebrew University on Mt.Scopus.
Our volunteers-who live in both the
affected Arab and the Jewish neighborhoods - have come together for the first
time to jointly fight this plan. Since June, 2015, we have worked countless
hours for one purpose only: to protect the health of our families and friends.
We have hired Adv. Eliad Sharaga to fight
for French Hill's future. Mr. Sharaga is well-known for his vast legal
experience and knowledge. To successfully plead our case, paid expert opinion
of environmentalists might also be needed.
The clock is ticking. Now is the time to
generously assist us in financing our right to live a healthy and peaceful life.
